How do I tell you about me? A seemingly simple question with a not-so simple answer. What do I say first? Should I talk about my passions? Why elder care is important? Perhaps, you’d prefer to hear about my marketing experience and education? I could choose any of those, but in truth, I’m a lot of things. Which of those things is most important will depend on what has brought you this far. You see, like a birdsong without an ear to hear it, these words have no meaning — no purpose — without you to read them. So, I’ll let you decide.
“If you have a strong purpose in life, you don’t have to be pushed. Your passion will drive you there.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
Marketing, Psychology, Copywriting, Consumer Behaviour
I fell into marketing, by accident, over 10 years ago. I had written an article while recovering from surgery, published it online, and it sold. Could I do it a second time? I had to find out. I wrote another one, and it sold almost instantly. Soon, I was making more writing on evenings and weekends than I was at my day job. I wasn’t sure if I could make a living doing what I enjoyed, but I had to find out. I began freelancing full-time in 2006.
It didn’t take long, for me to figure out there was more to writing content than just grammatically correct sentences. I started reading everything I could find on Search Engine Optimization (SEO), marketing, selling, analytics, and anything else related to my newfound passion. I realized pretty quickly, however, that you can’t always trust what you read. So, I started testing, tweaking, and testing some more to figure out what worked, what didn’t, and how I could use that information going forward. But, again, I realized it wasn’t enough.
Effective copy wasn’t enough to help businesses reach their audiences and achieve their goals. So, I dug around, researched, and tested some more. I learned how to use conversion optimization and consumer behaviour to make marketing strategies do what businesses needed them to do. Today, while I’m still writing content and creating strategies, I specialize in analyzing marketing strategies from the top down and redesigned them from the bottom up as needed.
To further my education, I also became a student. Currently, I’m working on a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Management in Marketing. I’m a passionate volunteer, active community member, and researcher.
Volunteering, Music, Elder Care & More
When it boils right down to it, the thing I’m most passionate about is people. When I’m not working to improve access to campus, public transportation, green initiatives, education, funding, and campus resources, I focus on improving end-of-life care and the lives of seniors. I am a huge supporter of the local arts community and a member of the Campus Women’s Centre focusing on safety, security, and inclusion. I’m a yoga enthusiast, habitual gym-goer, hiker, and all-around outdoor devotee.
Then, there’s the music side of me. Having been a professional and amateur oboist for almost 25 years, I indulge in music regularly. I also attend local events, help CKXU radio (our local university radio station), and compose.
Yes, I’m busy, but more importantly, I’m happy. I’m living a life that allows me to do the things I’m passionate about. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
“You can learn what you don’t know. You can overcome obstacles with a little patience, persistence, and perspicacity. But, if you don’t love what you do, no one else will either. Passion isn’t something you can fake.”
